    About this paper

    Smith chart

The Smith chart maps every normalized impedance z = r + jx inside a circle. Circles of constant resistance (r) all touch at the right edge, and arcs of constant reactance (x) curve up for inductive and down for capacitive values. This chart draws r and x from 0.1 to 20, with bolder, labeled lines at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5.

Use it to read reflection coefficients, design matching networks or follow a load along a transmission line. The chart is drawn as the largest circle that fits inside your margins.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this an impedance or an admittance chart?

It is an impedance (Z) chart. Rotate it by 180° to use it as an admittance (Y) chart.

How do I make sure the grid prints at the right size?

In the print dialog choose “Actual size”, “100%” or “No scaling”, and turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”. To confirm, print our free calibration test sheet and measure the 10 cm line with a ruler.

Is it free for commercial use?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no download limit. You can use the paper for classes, worksheets, products and client work.
